Screen Reel Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy covers your use of Screen Reel.

A local recorder and editor

Screen Reel records and edits on your Windows device. It does not include usage analytics, advertising SDKs, or tracking code, and it does not automatically upload recordings or project data.

While a recording is active, Screen Reel may process the screen pixels and system audio you selected, microphone audio when enabled, cursor positions and clicks, and keyboard virtual-key codes when keystroke capture is enabled. Virtual-key codes are not stored as text, but a sequence of key codes can still reveal what was typed.

Screen Reel also stores the settings and technical metadata needed to operate, such as selected devices, dimensions, timing, frame and drop counters, editing decisions, captions, and error logs.

Capture stops when the recording session ends. Keystroke capture, microphone capture, and system audio capture can be disabled in Settings.

Where data is stored

Recordings, audio, input events, captions, edits, and per-project caches are stored locally in the project folder. On a fresh install, application settings, logs, presets, downloaded speech models, and some rebuildable caches are stored under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Screen Reel. If %LOCALAPPDATA%\WinStudio already exists and the new folder does not, Screen Reel continues to use that legacy folder; if both folders exist, Screen Reel uses the new folder.

Project data and downloaded models remain until you remove them. Logs rotate automatically and keep at most 14 daily files; temporary, recovery, and rebuildable cache files may be replaced or removed during normal operation. Items sent to the Recycle Bin are then governed by Windows and your cleanup settings.

Network access and third parties

Caption transcription runs locally. If the selected Whisper speech model is missing, Screen Reel downloads the model over HTTPS from Hugging Face; the recording and its audio are not sent with that request. Standard network metadata, such as the IP address and request headers, is necessarily visible to the model host.

When Screen Reel is obtained through Microsoft Store, Microsoft handles Store downloads, licensing, and any purchase transaction. Screen Reel does not collect payment-card or billing details.

Links opened from the app, such as this website, open in your browser, and opening Windows microphone settings uses the local Windows Settings application. Each destination is governed by its own privacy policy.

Sharing an original .wsproj project folder shares its video, audio, captions, edits, cursor history, and captured key codes. The editor's Share copy action creates a separate copy without raw cursor and keystroke event streams, caches, or crash markers; it still includes the recording media, captions, and edits.

Screen Reel never sends diagnostics automatically. When you choose to save a support bundle, the app creates local, privacy-reduced summaries of the environment, settings, log severity counts, and recent project health. It excludes log messages, names, paths, device identifiers, captions, prompts, media, and captured input. You decide whether and where to share that file. Public issue trackers are public, so do not attach recordings or other sensitive material there.

Your control

You can inspect, move, copy, or delete project folders with ordinary Windows tools. You can delete downloaded caption models from Settings, and you can remove Screen Reel's settings, logs, presets, and caches from the local application-data folder after closing the app. Uninstalling the app may not remove projects or exported files stored elsewhere.

We may update this policy when the app changes. The revision date at the top of this page identifies the current version.
